Byte Reference Chart

Sometimes, I am confused as to the difference of a kilobyte versus a terabyte so I have typed this chart as helpful reference. It is from the textbook Go! With Microsoft Office 2007 Introductory (Gaskin, Ferrett, Vargas, Marks, Pearson Prentice Hall Upper Saddle River, New Jersey, Floppy Disk Clip Art© 2008, page 196).

Byte Chart

Byte   (B) 1   byte One character of data
Kilobyte   (KB) 1,024 bytes 1,024 characters or about half a page of doubled spaced typed characters
Megabyte   (MB) 1,048,576   bytes About 768 pages of typed text, floppy disk holds about 1.4 MB of data
Gigabyte   (GB) 1,073,741,824 bytes About 786,432 pages of text, 500 sheets of paper is about 2”, so about a stack of paper 262 ft. high!
Terabyte   (TB) 1,099,511,627,776   bytes About a stack of paper 51 miles high
Petabyte   (PB) 1,125,899,906,842,624   bytes Stack of paper about 52,000 miles high, nearly 1/4 the distance from the Earth to the moon

Also, from the textbook on page 205 is an explanation on how pixels are the millions of dots that make up the computer screen picture(s). The number of pixels determines the resolution. 1024 x 768 pixels means there are 1,024 columns with 768 pixels for more than 786,00 pixels. If looking at the dot pitch the smaller the dot pitch the better as it indicates less space between pixels. A good monitor has a dot pitch of .28mm Computer Monitor Clip Art(millimeters) or less. Computer speed is measured in megahertz (MHz) or gigahertz (GHz) and allows the computer to work faster or slower with a more programs running and windows open (pg. 195). The textbook is from an Intro to Microcomputers class at a local community college I attended for a short time. The class had time-consuming homework assignments. Also, I might add I once had an issue trying to send pictures via email and they only allow you send a certain size of pictures via email for free, and ended up having to use a flash drive as it had more storage space. Still, I am not sure what the average picture size is as it varies and depends, but from my experience they are always in the MB size.

Word Document of Post: Byte Chart

Usually, when you right click an object and go to properties it tells you the size in bytes of the object.
